Preparation

### Octahedron

* The octahedron is a 3D shape with 8 triangular faces, 12 edges, and 6 vertices.
* Octahedrons are formed by **equilateral** **triangles**, like the tetrahedron and icosahedron.
* It can also be formed by placing the bases of 2 square pyramids against each other.
* Platonic solids are shapes with regular, congruent polygons as faces.
* There are only 5 possible **Platonic solids**: the tetrahedron, the hexahedron (cube), dodecahedron, octahedron, and icosahedron.
* The shapes are named after the Greek philosopher, Plato, one of the many people to study and write about these shapes.
* Octahedra occur in nature in minerals and crystals such as diamonds, fluorite, and pyrite.
* Dice for playing games and decorative items and ornaments are sometimes octahedrons.

Octahedrons is a 3D shape with 8 **faces**, 12 edges, and 6 vertices. An octagon is a 2D polygon that has 1 **face**, 8 edges, and 8 vertices.
