Erik wants to invent an electronic keyboard to generate audio signals on the computer. He wants to further innovate using the interface of the keyboard with the design of the classic oboe as using the wind from his breath to make the instrument play. During the prototyping stage he comes across different challenges from building to programming playable keys from the Quirkbot and playing on a musical app on the computer. He calls on a teammate, Kristofer for a pretty awesome jam session!
Episodes from the School of Ridiculous Inventions are open-ended, inspirational resources you can share with your students learning how to brainstorm and act on prototyping ideas following an iterative and creative design process. There is a suggested list of resources to use if students want to try remaking the projects made.
Erik redesigns the interface of a keyboard using the power of his lungs to trigger a switch rather than pressing with fingers. For the switch, Erik is using a combination of the LED light and the light sensor sensing light or lack of to trigger sound with moving flaps of paper and reflective surfaces.
