The savanna is a type of grassland biome found in 6 continents. It's known for tall grasses and scattered trees with lack of precipitation. This biome is home to many different animals, like zebras, giraffes, and hippopotamuses.

Preparation

#### Grassland and Savanna Biomes

* **Biomes** are regions of the earth that share characteristics like plant life, temperature, and amount of precipitation. 
* Grasslands receive less water than forests, but more than deserts.
    * Grasses grow better than trees in a grassland. 
    * Grasses absorb carbon dioxide in the air and are an important biome to conserve. 
* Grasslands also occur in warm **tropical** locations, or more **temperate** locations. 
    * The continents of Australia and Africa have **tropical** grasslands, called savannas. 
    * Animals such as giraffes, zebras, and gazelles live and graze in African savannas. 
    * Elephants help conserve grasslands by stomping and knocking over young trees that grow.
    * Predators, like lions, leopards, and cheetahs also live in savannas.

**Tropical** grasslands experience dry and wet seasons, while remaining warm throughout. **Temperate** grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with rainfall. **Tropical** grasslands are warmer than **temperate** grasslands.
