    Parachute Lander Part 1: Foundation

    Strawbees Team

How do engineers safely land rovers on Mars? One method is to design high-strength parachutes! In this lesson, you will build your own Strawbees parachute and collect data about how the shape and size of a parachute affect its fall time and accuracy.

    Overview and Objectives

Let’s build, test, and analyze parachutes!

    In this lesson, students will:

    • Identify how engineers use parachutes and the principles of drag to slow the fall of a payload..
    • Build a parachute following a set of instructions
    • Test the parachute by collecting data on fall time and accuracy .
    • Analyze the test data to determine how area affects fall time and accuracy.

In this foundation lesson, you will learn how algorithms can be used to create build instructions for Strawbees. Then, you will test and improve an algorithm to build a shape as efficiently as possible!
