    Robotic Animal Adaptations

    Strawbees Team

Meet some creatures with phenomenal senses and adaptations, diving into the science behind each feature! Create a reptile fin experimenting with the micro:bit's temperature sensor and a robotic North American Desert Hare with self-cooling ears using a light sensor.

    Lesson Structure

When students go through this lesson in each section, the objectives they will learn are:

    • Warm-up – Discover the interconnectedness of animal senses and body parts and how these structures help them survive.
    • Imagine – Investigate how animals in particular habitats have structures and behaviors which help them grow, reproduce, and survive.
    • Create – Recreate an expanding fin reptiles use for cooling-off with the micro:bit’s temperature sensor.
    • Build – Build an American desert hare that widens its ears when it senses shade to cool off using the micro:bit’s light sensor.
    • Reflect – Share your learning through written reflection on animal senses and adaptations.
    • Challenges – Extend your robotic hare design and further your learning through creative open-ended challenges.

After this lesson students will be able to:

    • Describe how specialized animal senses help animals survive.
    • Analyze animal structures, internal and external, that help them grow, reproduce, behave, and survive in a habitat.
    • Construct a desert hare with specialized ears that help them cool down in the desert heat.
    • Compare how different animals have unique features for adapting to hot and dry climates.
    • Explain why some organisms thrive and why other organisms cannot survive in an arid desert biome.

    Structure

    In this lesson, I can:

    • Describe how specialized animal senses help animals survive.
    • Analyze animal structures, both internal and external, that help them grow, reproduce, behave, and survive in their habitat.
    • Construct a desert hare with specialized ears that help it cool down in the desert heat.
    • Compare how different animals have unique features for adapting to hot and dry climates.
    • Explain why some organisms thrive and others cannot survive in an arid desert biome.
