    Songs of Sea Mammals (micro:bit)

    Strawbees Team

Explore animal communication, honing in on the unique communication techniques of whales. Learn about whale songs in the deep ocean and code a mother and baby whale speaking to each other using micro:bit's radio signals. Watch the pair sing and sway in motion!

    Lesson Structure

When students go through this lesson in each section, the objectives they will learn are:

    • Warm-up – Explore communication in the animal world by examining how information is received, processed, and responded to in different ways.
    • Imagine – Investigate the complex systems of communication with whales, sea mammals of the deep oceans.
    • Create – Code sounds and animations that mimic the clicks, whistles, and songs of baby calf.
    • Build – Build a mother blue whale model and program a coda for calling the baby whale.
    • Reflect – Reflect on inputs and outputs of the micro:bit with whale communication matching movement.
    • Challenges – Extend your learning through real-world design challenges.

After this lesson students will be able to:

    • Describe the principle ways that animals communicate with each other.
    • Elaborate on whale communication, including what makes it unique from other animals.
    • Code sounds that mimic the clicks and whistles of blue whales using the micro:bit’s radio and speakers.
    • Build 2 blue whale models and attach a micro:bit and servo motor.
    • Program and test the whale to make the mouth “speak.”
    • Apply character elements to personal or customize their whale design.
    • Enhance or alter their whale design by solving problems connected to the sustainable development goal life below water.

    Structure

    In this lesson, I can:

    • Describe the principal ways that animals communicate with each other.
    • Discover the external and internal structures of whales that help them survive in the ocean.
    • Elaborate on whale communication, including what makes it unique from other animals.
    • Code sounds that mimic the clicks and whistles of blue whales.
    • Build and code 2 blue whale models using Strawbees and micro:bit.
    • Apply character elements to customize my whales’ designs.
    • Enhance or alter their whale design by solving problems connected to Sustainable Development Goal life below water.
